Problem registering teechart.ocx in runtime environment

Post by MonaLisa » Fri Nov 12, 2010 10:58 am

Hello,

trying to post in an existing thread didn't have the desired effect, so I'll try again by starting a new thread.

Here is my problem:

We had an old teechart4-license and used it in our VB6-software to show some pie-charts. It always worked without problems with over 300 customers on different windows-versions. A few month ago we had the first problem with our programm "hanging" on all forms with the pie-chart, but only one customer had this problem and we couldn't reproduce it.
Later while testing a new version of our software on a windows 7 32-bit ultimate virtual Machine (VMWare) we encountered the same problem described in the thread "Cant install teechart5.ocx". Our setup "hang" at the point where it tried to register the teechart.ocx with regsvr32.
I tried regsvr32 manually, but got no response. The system showed the busy cursor for a while, but nothing else, no failure notice but no success message either. The registration doesn't seem to have worked, because the forms still don't show.
I got the teechart8-evaluation version and tried that, but had the same problem. Then we decided to buy the new version teechart2010, but that also didn't work.
I have got a virtual machine with Windows 7 RC1, on which everything works fine and we have got some customers with windows 7 both 32- and 64-bit which don't have any problems either.

That's why I don't have any idea where to look. I tried the supposed solution from another thread too, which is to rename the .ocx-file to .dll and register that. But that didn't work for neither teechart.ocx nor teechert8.ocx nor teechart2010.ocx.

On my development-machine everythings works as it should, also most of our customers have no problems with the runtime version, except one, who has the same problem as I on my virtual machine.

Please look into it and give me some advices, what to check or what to do to fix the problem.

Thanks and greetings

Sandra

Hello MonaLisa,

I could reproduce your problem and I have solved it disabling UAC as explains in this page and now TeechartActivex5.ocx, TeeChartActivex8.ocx and TeeChartActivex2010.ocx are registred correctly in my Virtual Machine with specifications below:
  • Virtual Machine: VMWare 7.1
    S.O: windows 7 ultimate X86
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2Quad CPU Q8200 @2.33GHz
    Installed memory(RAM): 1.00 GB
Could you please, disable UAC of your virtual Machine and check again your if problem with manually registration persist?

I hope will helps.

Hello Sandra,

sorry for my late answer, I only saw your reply yesterday.

Unfortunately your tipp to disable the UAC didn't help in my case. I already had it disabled, before writing my post.
In the meantime I have reset my virtual machine to a snapshot directly after the installation of windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010,
that should be a 'clean' system. I disabled the UAC and tried my setup-routine for our software again, it includes the copying of teechart.ocx to the system directory and registering it there. The setup still doesn't work and is still hanging when registering teechart.ocx.
When I change the setup, so that it only copies teechart.ocx and doesn't register it, everything works fine. The manual registration with regsvr32 afterwards still doesn't work.

At the moment I'm at the end of my wisdom and decided to rewrite our program to call the teecharts dynamically and use a switch in the database to disable the use of teecharts, if there are problems either in registering or calling it. That seems to work ok.

Thanks for your efforts to help me, even if it didn't help in the end.
If I ever find the cause for the problem, I will let you know,

Greetings, MonaLisa

Hello MonaLisa,

I would make a question about your virtual machine:
Do you have installed a default printer in your virtual machine with windows 7?

Hello Sandra,

sorry, I didn't look into the thread for a while, so I didn't see your question.
Yes, I have installed a default printer and a few none-default ones as well. The default is our company "print-copy-fax-machine", that I use from my development machine too.

Hope that helps, greetings,

MonaLisa

Hi ,

I have the same issues as the above with teechart5.
Do you have any hang free version for this edition?

Thanks,
George
